Must have had a heavy night!!!!
We stopped overnight and had our first BBQ (braai). Not sure where we were just in the middle of nowhere. Not really BBQ weather but we went for it anyway.
Yes it is a gas BBQ! we thought it would be better for us but can see us getting a charcoal one very soon. You wont believe the trouble we had finding a chicken with 4 legs!
The following day we arrived at Earith. We had been told it was a nice riverside village and I suppose it was once but looked tired to us. We struggled to get on the pontoon mooring as most are designed for the the shorter plastic boats and there wasnt much room. We spent two nights there while we did a bit of housework on the boat and Trev managed to watch Leeds Utd beat Nottingham Forest 4 - 0. :-).
We took this photo the night before we left.
On our way to St. Ives we saw this unfortunate boat.
Not the first we have seen just abandoned but didnt look to bad close up. Bit of a restoration project!
Stayed overnight in St Ives and visited a real ale pub called the Oliver Cromwell (apparently he stayed in St Ives for a while) then visited an Indian restaurant that we had been told about. Very average and not a patch on Aroma in Northallerton. :-(
The following morning saw us move through Huntingdon to stay in Godmanchester which is said to be the oldest town in the country. Well the pubs definately were. Spit and sawdust everywhere. It was Caz's birthday and we had done the indian the night before and were to head to a good chinese to finish the celebrations but we found a decent Pub and stayed there all night!
Wednesday morning we walked into Huntingdon, about 2 miles and picked up some supplies. Really hot and the sweat was pouring off us when we got back. Must have been 21 degrees! Setting of we decided to find a nice quiet mooring in the middle of nowhere where we could BBQ but we hadnt taken account of the blustery conditions. Every place where we could moor was too windy and would have blown the gas out on the BBQ so we kept on going till we reached the tranquil sounding place calles St. Neots. another Cambridgeshire gem!
We moored next to this quiet meadow on the outskirts of the town and settled down to cook some food on our cob. http://www.cobbglobal.com/index.php
Only to find that the local youths spent most of the evening riding a motorbike up and down the field next to us! They eventually ran out of petrol and left. We had a special treat as we had bought a goose egg from St Ives and Caz made a
The next morning we awoke with Merlot leaning over to one side. The water levels had dropped and we were aground. A few revs on the engine and some pushing and shoving eventually got us moving but not before we had breakfast with our guests!
The swan nearest the boat was the daddy and was always first for any scraps. They are lovely to look at but they have serious attitude!!! Usually they will hiss and make other noises when they are not happy which is most of the time!
We left our mooring and headed into town for much needed water only to find the tap disconnected and no water. A black mark against the town council!!! We seem to spend most of our time looking for water and filling the tank and the rest of the time trying to get rid of it !!! Into the town for supplies before we set off in search of water and heading for Great Barford.
More than enough for now and will post more tomorrow. really nice mooring we have here and heading into Bedford on the bus tomorrow. Bye.
